BETTING RULES:

Limit Games:

Hold-em and Omaha are community card games. The first action (bets) is made up of a 'small blind' and a 'big blind'. These bets are made by the first two players sitting after the dealer. Small blind puts in “half” a bet. Big blind a “full” bet. If playing on a “2-4” table small blind is $1, big blind is $2.

First player after big blind has the option of:

  1. Folding hand.
  2. Calling big blind.
  3. Raising. In a limit game the raise will be exactly the big blind, in this case $2.

Each player in turn following has the same options. A re-raise would then be from $4 to $6.

After the flop the first bet is $2. Raises can be $2. After the turn and river cards raises are $4.

No limit:

Small blind and big blind are the same (as above). First player can then decide to bet anywhere from a minimum bet of $2 (in the case of a no-limit $1-$2 game), as high as all the chips he has at the table. Any player can re-raise to a maximum of all the money he has at table, and a minimum of the bet made in front of him. If a player bets $10, the minimum raise that can be made is to $20.

Bets can be made before flop, after flop, after turn and after river.

Pot limit:

Blinds act the same as above in a pot limit game. Minimum bet is always the size of the big blind. Maximum bet is the amount in the pot.

When a bet is made a re-raise can be made equaling the amount in the pot + the size of the bet, this is quite a large bet. For example: if the pot is $25 and a player bets $15. You can now match the $15 bet and raise 25+15+15= 55. The nice thing about on-line poker is the site will do all the math for you, and just show you what the max bet you can make is.

7 Card Stud games.

The betting works the exact same is a limit game. The only difference is rather then a revolving big blind and small blind there is an ante. This is a small sum put in the pot by each player before receiving first 3 cards.

Low card: First player to act in a stud game is the player who gets the lowest face card. Typically this bet known as the 'bring in' or 'low card' is 30% to 50% of the first bet. Examples:

  • $0.50 - $1.00 game the “bring in” is $0.25
  • $1.00 - $2.00 game the “bring in” is $0.50
  • $3.00 - $6.00 game the “bring in” is $1.00

Each site will have a link explaining their “bring ins”.
